Although the film became a box office giant and earned high praise, Smith explained that he didn’t connect with the story then. “Chris Nolan brought me ‘Inception’ first, and I didn’t get it,” he said. “I’ve never said that out loud.” Smith also noted that films involving alternate realities don’t always translate well during early conversations.

Smith explained that he believed the story should center on love, not vengeance. He told THR, "I really wanted to make that movie." “But it had to be a love story. Not a vengeance story.”
Tarantino envisioned a bold revenge tale, while Smith wanted to anchor the narrative in a husband’s emotional journey to rescue his wife. Despite mutual respect, the two couldn’t align their visions.
