Funny Food Gimmicks

T-Mobile

What's the best way to introduce yourself to the new neighbors? Bake them a cake! That must be what T-Mobile is thinking, at least. They've recently introduced 5G to America with a strange collaboration: a Betty Crocker layer cake for its new customers!

A Cake With The Right Ingredients

T-Mobile

Didn't think 2020 could get any stranger? Well, T-Mobile just unveiled its Supercharged 5G Un-carrier Layer Cake, a true treat for the taste buds. Each layer of the cake represents the different bands of a 5G connection – low, medium, and high. "We said it first and we'll say it again … T-Mobile's 'layer cake' approach to 5G is the ONLY way to #5GForAll. Hell, we've even bake a cake with Betty Crocker to celebrate it," said Neville Ray, President of Technology at T-Mobile. "When it comes to 5G, you've got to have layers — low band, mid band and high band make for a tasty cake. Unfortunately for them, AT&T and Verizon's 5G networks don't have the right ingredients, like clear 5G spectrum in all three bands."

Eventually, the company plans to expand their national coverage to all three types of 5G. The band represented by the first layer – low band (600 MHz 5G) – has coverage around the U.S. Over 250 million people across 1.3 million square miles can use T-Mobile's low band 5G!

The Other, Sweet 5G Layers

T-Mobile

The mid-band of the sweet cake (2.5 GHz) covers a smaller area but comes with faster speed. Perfect for internet lovers, the mid-band has a download speed average of around 300 Mbps. That means an average user can download up to 1 gigabit-per-second, and the 5G network will work more than seven times faster than LTE. The top of the cake is always the most delicious, and that's exactly how T-Mobile presented their high band (mmWave). It's even faster yet; however, it can also be blocked by trees, windows, and similar surfaces. The top of the cake is great for small city blocks!

Believe it or not, T-Mobile sold out of the cake within a few minutes of releasing it to customers on their website. However, the company says it's dedicated to bringing it back when the time is right. If you're a T-Mobile customer and didn't get a chance to taste this delicious cake, you can sign up on their website to have an email alert sent out when it returns.
